Concrete vs. helical pile footings (and why we prefer helical)

Minnesota requires deck footings to reach below the frost line, at least 4 feet deep, with a flared base. Traditional concrete footings work, but they’re not always the most reliable in clay-heavy or boggy soil.

That’s why we prefer helical piles on most of our projects.

Why helical piles are better:

    • Drilled 7 feet into the ground (well below frost)
    • No digging or bell base required
    • Stronger load capacity (perfect for hot tubs or elevated decks)
    • Lifetime warranty
    • Won’t shift, settle, or heave
    • Easy to adjust or extend if needed

Pricing:

    • Concrete footing: $250 each
    • Helical pile footing: $425 each

We almost always recommend helicals for long-term durability, especially if you're considering a hot tub deck or multi-level layout.

Deck Add Ons That Can Affect The Price

Add-ons that affect deck pricing

The size and shape of your deck are just one part of the budget. Upgrades like these can improve safety, function, and appearance, but they will increase the overall price.

Popular upgrades:

    • Aluminum, cable, or glass railings
    • Stair lighting or solar caps
    • Gates (for pets or safety)
    • Privacy screens or decorative fencing
    • Pergolas or shade structures
    • RainEscape or dry-under systems
    • Hot tub framing or load-bearing reinforcement
    • Wrapped beams and posts
    • Screened-in porches or roof structures
    • Custom stairs or platforms
    • Electrical and gas hookups

Thinking about adding a pergola or privacy screen? We can build it to match your new deck.

Be careful comparing deck quotes—cheaper isn’t always better

If you’ve started gathering quotes, you may have seen a few that seem surprisingly low. It’s natural to want to save money, but it's important to understand what you’re really getting.

Here’s what some lower-priced contractors might skip:

Common shortcuts to watch out for:

    • Undersized framing or poor spacing that weakens the structure
    • Cheap fasteners that rust or fail in harsh weather
    • Shallow or improperly installed footings that can heave or crack
    • Unlicensed labor or subs without oversight or warranty
    • No permits or inspections, putting you at risk later

Why it matters:

Saving a few thousand dollars up front can cost you double that in repairs, or worse, force you to rebuild later to meet code. A deck is a major structure. It needs to be safe, strong, and built to last.

We’ve seen it too many times: someone chooses the lowest bidder and calls us two years later with sagging boards, rotting posts, or a failed inspection when selling the home.

At Thunderstruck Restorations, we don’t cut corners. We use quality materials, build to Minnesota code, and offer real warranties. We’d rather explain our pricing now than have to explain a failure later.
